Spathodea companulata is famous throughout the tropical world for its masses of bright red/orange flowers. Common names for this tree include African Tulip Tree, Fire Tree, and Flame of the Forest. Native to West Kenya and Uganda, these trees were introduced to tropical regions as decorative shade trees. Their large, dark green leaves are about 5" long. Red/orange tulip-like flowers are produced in masses throughout the year. The flowers petals often have yellow edges. Anyone who has ever seen a hillside of these trees in bloom is sure to remember that vibrant sight forever! African Tulip Trees can be quite large -- growing to 30-45 feet. It can grow as wide as it is tall, which provides a huge canopy of shade. The wood is soft, however, and these trees often suffer broken branches in heavy storms. They are fast-growing trees that like sun and ample water. They are hardy to USDA Zone 10a.
