Cryptostegia grandiflora is a showy vine-like shrub with evergreen glossy leaves
lilac, bell-shaped flowers. Common names for this plant include Purple Allamanda, Madagascar
Rubber Vine, India Rubber Vine or just plain Rubber Vine.
Rubber Vine is a self-supporting many-stemmed vine that grows 6-8 feet tall, with long trailing
branches. This vine can easily be pruned (causing branching) and it can be kept as a free-standing shrub.
The leaves are dark green and glossy, 2-4" long, 1-2" wide and in opposite pairs.
Flowers, which occur in the warmer months of the year, are large and showy,
with five white to light purple petals in a funnel shape.
The seedpods are rigid, 4-5" long, ½-1½" wide and grow in pairs at the end of a short stalk .
Rubber vine should be planted in full sun, in rich, moist, well-drained soil.
It can tolerate temperatures as low as 35°F.
In the tropics, it is found naturally along roadsides, along waterways, in the moist forest,
and in rainforest openings at low elevations.
