This lovely, easy to grow tropical plant is a real bloomer. It makes rosy-red flower bracts, with yellow sepals with a dark area on the end. Each flower can be up to 6". They can be grown and bloomed in containers or in the ground in warm areas. They make lovely green foliage that looks tropical too. Put this plant wherever you want that tropical look! It gets to be about 5 feet tall. The flowers look great in arrangements.

The psittacorums are great little Heliconias. They have no particular blooming season and produce flowers all year long, usually blooming a few months after planting. They are less bothered by cool temperatures than other Heliconias and they also require less care. They are hardy in USDA zone 9-11. Protect them from frost. They will be damaged below 40° F. In cold areas of zone 9, they may die back to the ground, but should come back in the spring if mulched. For best results in cooler areas, plant in a warm greenhouse or take container inside in the winter.

Grow in full sun to light shade. They need well-drained, rich, moist soil and they like humidity. They spread rapidly, so in a few months, you will have a very full plant.
