Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, as well as the islands of the South Pacific and Caribbean, plants of the genus Heliconia are noted for their strikingly beautiful flower bracts and wonderfully big leaves, which give the plants a distinctly tropical appearance.

Heliconia x nickeriensis is a hybrid cross between H. psittacorum and H. marginata that is a small-to-medium-sized Heliconia. It is somtimes called Nicky or Nicky Spike. The inflorescence is upright, with pinky-red bracts that have yellow on the lip, near the tip and near the base. The rachis is yellow with a touch of pink. It blooms summer to fall.

This heliconia should be planted in full sun to part shade in rich, well-drained soil. It should be fed heavily during the growing season. They will grow to a height of 4 to 10 feet, with a spread of 3 to 6 feet. Hardy in USDA Zones 10B-11.
