Heliconia mariae - Also known as Beefsteak Heliconia
Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, as well as the islands of the South Pacific,
plants of the genus Heliconia are noted for their strikingly beautiful flower bracts and wonderfully big leaves,
which give the plants a distinctly tropical appearance.
This one is a whopper.
The plant alone is huge.
It grows to be 15-20 feet tall, with huge leaves.
A large stand of these heliconias is quite an impressive sight.
But not to be outdone, this plant makes huge dark red flowers.
They are pendent and can be over 3 feet long.
It can bloom throughout the year.
This heliconia needs full sun to half shade.
It needs zone 10-11, and moist fertile soil.
