Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, as well as the islands of the South Pacific and
Caribbean (including Puerto Rico),
plants of the genus Heliconia are noted for their strikingly beautiful flower bracts and wonderfully big leaves,
which give the plants a distinctly tropical appearance.
This is a large Heliconia, that is easy to grow. This plant can grow 12 feet tall in tropical conditions.
It makes beautiful large (8-10") golden yellow flowers, which look great in tropical flower arrangements.
It blooms from April to December.
This unique plant is used as a specimen for
tropical gardens. The inflorescence may be cut for indoor
decoration where they last for several weeks.
This heliconia should be planted in full sun to part shade in rich, well-drained soil.
They should be fed heavily during
the growing season. They will grow to a height of 10-15 feet, with a spread of 3-6 feet. Hardy in USDA Zones 10B-11.
If grown in a large container, it needs to be kept above 50° F to avoid damage.
