Costus pictus is also referred to as Costus congestus and Costus mexicanus. The common name for this plant is Spiral Ginger.

Costus pictus is a vigorous growing in a shady location. This particular form has broad, dark green leaves and beautiful solid red stems, which grow with an outstanding spiral effect. The green inflorescences, with their yellow-with-red-striped flowers, are produced at the ends of the leafy stalks in summer. Less frequently, they bloom from basally in the spring.

Costus pictus can grow to about 6 feet in medium sun to part shade. It requires rich, moist soil. It is hardy to USDA Zone 8.
